Frequently Asked Questions
Does IconStyler move or delete any of my files?
Never. IconStyler only changes the icon shown for a folder, file type, drive or system item. The folders, files and everything inside them stay exactly where they are, untouched. Resetting an icon just puts the default picture back.
Windows SmartScreen or my antivirus flagged it on first run. Is that safe?
Yes, that's expected. IconStyler is digitally signed, but it's a new app from a small independent studio, so Microsoft's reputation system may not know it yet. If SmartScreen shows a blue "Windows protected your PC" box, click "More info" then "Run anyway" and you're set. The warning goes away on its own as more people download it. The same goes for the occasional antivirus false positive; you can add IconStyler as an exception if needed.
What if I don't like a change?
Easy. Every icon can be reset on its own, or you can hit Reset all icons to send everything back to the Windows default in one click. IconStyler also saves a restore point before your changes, so you can undo everything back to that moment. Nothing is permanent, and there's a confirm-before-reset safety toggle on by default.
What are Live Folders?
New in 2.0. Your folders get your own color design with a live peek at what's inside, just like Windows does. New folders get it automatically, even when IconStyler is closed. Free covers your Desktop, Lifetime lets you choose any place. Turn it off any time and your folders go back to normal.
An app update reset my icon. What now?
That's what Icon Guard is for, new in 2.0. Some apps put their own icon back when they update. Icon Guard watches the app icons you changed and puts yours right back after an update. It's part of Lifetime.
Will my icons survive a Windows reset or a new PC?
Use Backup and restore. It saves all your profiles, applied icons and settings into a single file. Restore it after a Windows reset or on a brand new PC and everything comes back the way you had it. Backup and restore is part of Lifetime.
Is it really a one-time purchase?
Yes. The free version covers the basics: up to 10 file-type icons, the main folder icons, This PC icons, Live Folders on your Desktop and themes. The $19.99 Lifetime unlock adds everything else, like drives, programs, Icon Guard, unlimited profiles, icon packs and backup. Paid once, updates included forever. No subscription.
Which versions of Windows are supported?
IconStyler is built for Windows 11 (64-bit) right now. Support for more Windows versions and more languages is on the roadmap.
Icons Stuck or Acting Up?
Open Troubleshoot in the app and use Clear icon cache. Still not right? Use Reset all icons to go back to the Windows defaults. It's safe and takes seconds.
